School Records
In 1980, race distances were changed from yards to meters and the shot put changed from 8lb to 4K. Under the advisement of both the NFSHS and the NSAA, no attempt has been made to convert times/distances from English to metric. Instead, we choose to honor competitors based on their actual performances. Separate varsity records have been kept for the years 1967-1979 and for the years 1980–present.
All times, heights, and distances are from NSAA sanctioned track & field meets and are taken from the published official results of the meet. Freshman records set prior to 1998 include records from both Barr Middle School and Walnut Middle School. Times recorded to the tenth of a second are official hand-held times that have been rounded up as per NFSHS regulations. Times recorded to the hundredth or thousandth of a second are official electronic times and appear in the format they were published. Under no circumstances have electronic times been converted to hand-held times.
Times marked with a letter "c" have been converted from hand-held to electronic. The need for this conversion occurs because of timing system failures that result in some of the times at a meet being fully automatic and others hand-held. Typically when this occurs, the camera operator manually starts the time but uses the camera to record finishes. Because the time is started manually, the finish time is rounded up to the nearest tenth. Then, for the 100m, the 200m, and the 100/110m hurdles, a conversion factor of 0.24 is added to the rounded-up hand-held time. For the 300m hurdles and the 400m, a conversion factor of 0.14 is added to the rounded-up hand-held time. For races of 800m and longer, no conversion is necessary.
We also choose to honor the accomplishments of Freshman athletes based on the tradition of having separate track meets designated as "Freshman only."
Special thanks to Coach Dave Jorgensen and Coach Roger Nielsen for their help in researching records set prior to 1980!
